Alone In The Wilderness is a coming-of-age story with an indigenous focus. Told from the viewpoint of Flint Red Coyote, a teenaged Cheyenne high school student who faces racism from dominant culture peers, Alone in the Wilderness recounts one young man's way of finding the best in himself while discovering through experience a rich and varied heritage of survival skills. Challenged by unfriendly white students to live as his ancestors have, young Flint uses all his resources to plan for the danger of spending three fall-into-winter months alone in the Beartooth Wilderness Area of Montana. Together with his dog O'kohome, Flint faces a blizzard, hunger, exhaustion, and the theft of his food supply by a bigger mammal (grizzly bear). In the end he helps to rescue a friend and finds what he did not know he was looking for, self respect, and a way to appreciate and use his own unique spiritual and physical gifts.

Written by Hap Gilliland, a professor in Native American Education at Montana State University, Alone In The Wilderness has many details of Native American practices and tools that enrich the story. The book is pleasurable to read, and always offers a positive take on the problems encountered. It should appeal to young people of multiple and varied ethnic origins.

Acutally just a note: This book was eventually titled "Soldier Blue" after the movie of the same name (Candice Bergan, Peter Strauss - late night TV, etc.). So, if you own Soldier Blue, you own Arrow in the Sun.

The Beaches of Cheyenne by colorful storyteller Beverely Lentz is a wonderfully written story that will have the reader swiftly turning the pages as quickly as they can.

The plot is intriguing and well thoughtout and the characters easy to identify with.

An engaging tale about a recently married couple who may have just moved into a haunted house and so the story begins...

The Beaches of Cheyenne is a story that everyone will enjoy reading!

I thought the images were fun and colorful. I really liked the way Corinne and Cheyenne set up the book..it was very informative. I think that they shouold write another book for Golden Books.

This is a unique coming-of-age story, set in the Badlands well before the arrival of white settlers. Little Bear is a native American adolescent. He has won admiration for courage and skill in hunting, but his distaste for war against other tribes has made him somewhat of a misfit. As a rite of passage into adulthood, he must spend about two weeks alone in the wilds, eating only what he can kill or find. During this retreat, he falls in the dark into a canyon. The "two weeks" could be much shorter or longer, depending on whether he can survive or ever get out. I confess I am not reviewing the audio cassette, but the book which I read in 1958, then 1980, then 1994. I was spellbound when I first read it, and years later the magic was still there. The word pictures are superb. Little Bear's encounters with bison and a mountain lion become very suspenseful. I really hope this book can become available to the public in a more affordable format. It is nothing like SHANE, Schaefer's most famous story, which I found enjoyable though somewhat trite. But I found CANYON to be not only Schaefer's best, but one of the best by any author. This nontraditional Western would be cherished by those who love nature and nonviolence.

This is a very funny western with plenty of action and two great characters in it. A cowboy helps out an English gentleman and his sister. Hopefully this book will be reprinted one day.

On September 17, 1868, Eugene Carr's Fifth United States cavalry guided by "Buffalo Bill" Cody, surprised and attacked Tall Bull's village of Cheyenne Dog Soldiers at Summit Springs, Colorado Territory. In one of the hastily abandonded lodges, a ledger book was found which had been initially captured by the Cheyenne during their retalitory raids following the Sand Creek massacre four years earlier. In the book were drawings of events of great valor done by Cheyenne warrior/artists.

The authors have reproduced the pages of the original ledgerbook in their original size and have added very detailed explainations of the drawings.

This book is very well researched and produced. David F. Halaas is the Colorado State Historian and Andrew Masich is a past president of that organization.

I thought Jack Weyland was a sheltered, happy-go-lucky, LDS guy. I thought his books were a little cheezy and were for little girls. Then I read Cheyenne in New York. It was one of the greatest books I've read this year. And I'm in college! He depicted the characters feelings well, and there were unexpected twists in the story. I've had the privilege of having Jack Weyland as my LDS Bishop, and have come to know him. He is an awesome person with a lot of stories to tell, and he tells them well. This book is amazing...not the typical Jack Weyland book! I would reccomend it to anyone of any age...
